On the topic of male exhibitionists versus female exhibitionists, I think the gender divide is a lot less of a deciding factor than the intent.

That’s an interesting thought actually, and one I’m not entirely sure if I agree with. Aside from the ones who are legitimate creeps and have no filter, a lot of the “good” men I’ve met seem to have a hard time expressing their sexual desires freely, way more so than women, and I feel like media is partly responsible for that. Explicit male nudity in TV / movies is rare, and whenever a dick is shown on screen, it’s usually for the explicit purpose of shock value / making the audience uncomfortable. There’s an almost universal negative connotation to male nudity on screen. “Positive male sexualization” on screen is almost exclusively limited to scenes of a hot chiseled dude being shirtless. Maybe they’ll give the audience a glimpse of his ass, but it seems like the only way to sexualize men in media these days without the connotation being negative is by keeping their penis off screen at all costs. (And again, I think we can blame the patriarchy for that.)

So just as the abundance of positive female sexualization in media has contributed to the current cultural standard that a naked woman is “hot and sexy”, the relative rarity / near universal negative connotation of male nudity in media has contributed to this idea that a naked man is “creepy” regardless of intentions, cuz that’s all people know / see in media. I think a lot of men feel that way, they feel repressed sexually because media and culture has taught them them that by being open about those things, regardless of the context or their intentions, makes them come off as creeps or sex addicts. If I were a man, honestly? I don’t know if I’d be into exhibitionism. I first got into it because of videos I saw of other women doing it, and I think it’s because I saw a bit of myself in those videos, especially the ones where the women seem shy or self conscious about being naked in public. It felt relatable, and eventually that turned into this idea of “it seems like something I could do” but that element of relatability wouldn’t have been there if I wasn’t a woman, which would of made it seem way more daunting / risky to actually try it for myself.

This is a really big topic of discussion and one that I can only say so much on, I don’t have any formal background in gender studies aside from one gen ed I remember nothing about from my first semester in college, but I do like to think I have pretty good media literacy and a very open friend group that’s pretty much evenly split between men and women, and in my experience, a lot of my guy friends have a much harder time talking about this stuff than the women I’m friends with. What I have noticed is that a lot of those guy friends of mine have no issues talking about it once the women in our group initiate the conversation and establish this tone of “it’s okay to talk about this, we won’t judge”. If they have a harder time just talking about it, I assume it’s even harder for them to act on their desires without fear of how it would come across.

And lemme stress one more time: I’m talking about the “good” men in this post, the ones I trust to call my friends, the ordinary, well meaning guys that don’t treat women like objects and aren’t thinking about sex 24/7. Men like that definitely exist, I’ve seen / heard the horror stories over the years, but I’m not talking about those ones. This discussion is far less interesting if we’re talking about those men.

I agree with the other ladies in saying that, to use the phrasing in the original question, female exhibitionists don't "use" the sexualization. At most, we benefit slightly from the difference reaction/attitude that Emerald mentioned. But you can never rely on that really. While you may be less likely to get the cops called on you and more likely to get wolf whistles, it doesn't necessarily make it feel any safer to go out. Anyone who sees you could take issue with it and could react badly.

I am similar to Nikki (in how she acted back when she was active) in that I tend to not want to be seen or caught. So I'd also love to hear the opinion of more women who are a lot more public and in front of people with their exhibitionism. It's possible that they feel that the more lax/accepting attitude has noticeably made a difference to them and it is something they actively use to their advantage.

On the topic of male exhibitionists versus female exhibitionists, I think the gender divide is a lot less of a deciding factor than the intent. When you think of men doing it, you imagine a guy in a trenchcoat jumping out and flashing you for his own sexual thrill (at your expense). A woman will usually be getting the thrill simply from just being naked (and then she will accidentally run into someone) or she will be at a party or something where people have made it clear they want her to do it (and probably talked her into it). I think if a guy was just enjoying the sens eof liberation for himself and then got interrupted by people, causing him to get all embarrassed and cover up, then he likely wouldn't get as extreme a reaction as a flasher in a trenchcoat.

I am of the opinion that the only problem with sexualization of women in the media is that, as you said, it's one-sided. When you have a patriarchy where men are often the ones calling shots in media and art it makes sense that a lot of the sexualization is going to be targeting women, so I think if anything the one-sidedness of it is a side effect of that bigger problem.

I don't really think female exhibitionists contribute to the problem, as we take our own sexualization into our own hands.

Though you can also argue that men also face something unfair here. When a women does exhibitionism it's considered hot, but when a man does it it's considered creepy. Now we could talk about this in depth and say that the reason this happens is because of said patriarchy and because women often are targeted by men in creepy ways, but that's not the point of this post. But the point I'm trying to make is that maybe the sexualization would be less one-sided in exhibitionism if men weren't more likely to get chastised for being naked in public compared to women.

I’m kinda surprised I’m the first one responding to this given that it’s been sitting here for a whole week apparently. I usually don’t like being the first person to say something in a conversation, but here goes…

I can’t say the prevalence of female nudity in media ever bothered me too much? It makes me roll my eyes, sure, I remember when my friends and I marathoned Game of Thrones back in college, there was a joke between us that you can’t make it more than halfway through any episode of that show without seeing a pair of boobs, but I’ve kinda always understood it as just a part of culture that’s never going to go away, at least not anytime soon. The patriarchy has been the dominant social structure for most of human history, which meant the first influential writers and filmmakers were primarily men. Naturally, those men told stories they could generally understood, stories that would be “generally appealingly” to a typical male audience, and what’s “generally understood / appealing to men” is a hot naked woman. Thus the standard of “female nudity on screen is fine, male nudity is distasteful” was born. That’s how I have always seen it, at least.

I think it’s indisputable that media has the power to shape one’s worldview and that the prevalence of female nudity in media definitely contributes to women being sexualized far more than men, but again, I’ve always understood it as “a part of culture that can’t be changed” so I don’t let it seriously bother me. I grew up in a house that raised me to more so “adapt” to the system than to rebel against it if you know what I mean, so although I’m very aware of my status as an “sexy object of desire” to men, I don’t weaponize it. That’s also why I wouldn’t say I “contributed” to the problem of sexualization as a (retired) female exhibitionist. Back when I was practicing exhibitionism, it was always in a way such that no one could ever find out, and to do this day, I’ve never told anyone that I used to get naked in public for fun. I practiced exhibitionism for me and me alone, no one else. I feel like I can’t really be “taking advantage of female sexualization” if I’m practicing exhibitionism in secret, y’know?

It would be interesting to hear some other perspectives on this question. I’m well aware there are a lot of exhibitionists out there who do it for the excitement of showing themselves off to people, and I imagine they would have a very different answer to this question.

A common complaint is that nudity in media is one-sided, i.e., there is much more female nudity than male. And this, it is claimed, contributes to sexualization of the female body.

On the other hand, female exhibitionists directly contribute to this trend. You could argue that they actively make use of the sexualization of the female body. So what do they think about the aforementioned issues?

So when I “did” practice exhibitionism, I was always torn about this. For one, as I’ve said in pretty much every other post I’ve made on this forum, I am terrified of being recognized / people I know finding out I do this as a hobby (or at least “used to”), so the idea of just taking photos, let alone sharing them online, always put a pit in my stomach.

On the other hand though, one of my favorite parts of exhibitionism was flaunting my body in places I definitely wasn’t supposed to be, and that usually involved striking and holding some very provocative poses, slapping my ass, and of course, masturbating. The thought of “mmm I must look SO HOT right now” was a huge turn on for me when naked in public, and having since come to terms that exhibitionism was basically just a kink for me, getting turned on was the ultimate goal of it for me. That said… I was always just limited to “thoughts”. I could only “imagine” how good I really looked, for all I knew, the pose I was hitting might’ve been really unflattering from a third person perspective, and with that in mind, sometimes I did consider snapping a few photos while I’d be out streaking at night if just for myself, no one else. I’d probably stash them in a super secret folder hidden in the deepest recesses of my computer, but I’d have them to admire myself.

Even then though, when I was feeling braver and “considered” the thought of taking some photos or videos, I didn’t really have any method of doing so. In my story, I made a point to mention that when I get naked in public, I leave everything behind so I could roam truly untethered. I almost always went barefoot since I didn’t really feel “naked” if I was still wearing shoes, but that sensation also applied to if there was anything in my hands. I never wanted to be holding anything, I wanted to be able to wander with no concerns for anything, and that meant I almost never had my phone on me, and no phone meant no photos. If I wanted to take any, I’d have to carry my phone or a selfie stick with me, and that would really take me out of the experience, carrying those pieces of reality with me would diminish that liberating feeling of being detached from society and exploring the world in nothing but the skin I was born into. If I was a porn star who practiced exhibitionism with the intent of creating content then this obviously wouldn’t matter to me, but that’s not who I am. I practice exhibitionism because I like it first and foremost, and consequently, I do it in the way that’s most fun for me. That means bringing no extra accessories along. The only other option would be to bring someone along with me to handle the camera, but uhhhh yeah, if “holding my phone” took me out of the experience and made it harder to feel “detached from reality”, having someone follow in me around staring at me nonstop would be unbearable.

I swear I don’t mean to talk this much in these forum posts, but to circle back to the issue of hypocrisy… I don’t think it’s hypocritical to enjoy consuming exhibitionist content if you yourself don’t create it? Everyone’s situation and approach to nudity / practicing exhibitionism is different. Some of us do it with the intent of sharing it with others, some of us do it for ourselves, and some of us don’t do it at all and just enjoy it from the sidelines, and that’s okay! So long as everyone’s engaging with this interest on their own terms and everyone’s respectful of each others’ terms, I think that’s all that really matters.

I noticed this room had very few topics in it so I hope I can get some real conversation going in here. It also seemed like the best place to post about this without getting all the men saying "be more brave" and "you should post pictures" simply because they would like to see me naked.
Anyway, I've been into exhibitionism for a good decade. I love reading stories. I love seeing pictures and watching videos. And I go out and do it myself from time to time, when I find a good opportunity. But I've never posted pictures or videos of my own adventures. This isn't a shyness/embarrassment thing, and it isn't because I'm worried someone might recognize me one day. I simply don't want to. My exhibitionism is for me and I don't feel the need to share it. I also don't like the idea of having to find time to pose and take photos; feels like it would take me out of the experience.
I think it's great that other women do, and I love getting to actually see it (rather than just words). I guess I just feel a little hypocritical sometimes enjoying other women proudly showing themselves off while I'm not contributing the same.

I don’t think that makes you hypocritical at all ! You don’t have to take photos if that isn’t your thing. You can enjoy this website and this community and share your own thoughts without having to post photos. The men who insist that you should are idiots. This is about you and your experience, you’re enjoying the moment and you like it that way so I don’t see why you should force yourself to do something else that isn’t natural to you. I personally post photos because I don’t necessarily do exhibitionism but I enjoy using photos as a way to imagine scenarios and create different situations. This allow me to enjoy enf without taking too much risk. So I’d say, to each their own 🙂
